21 Jul Sparrow for President
Do you remember when elections were ugly but not yet toxic? Back in 2008 we started to make a documentary about the poet Sparrow’s run for the presidency. He runs every 4 years, but it consists of performances like standing on the corner of St. Marks and 2nd Avenue and proclaiming, “Don’t vote for me”. He also publishes books of poems about his efforts. We knew Sparrow because of our documentary about Soft Skull Press’ republication of a discredited Bush bio. However, I also knew of Sparrow because he always has the best writing in The Sun, a magazine that overflows with great writing. We told our friends at rooftop films about the project and they suggested that we make it as a web series as part of a project that they were doing with IFC. IFC didn’t like the project- but we did- so screw them. Here are all 6 episodes and a little portrait of Sparrow.
